A Disappointing Debut

About the best we can say about Attorney General Michael Mukasey’s testimony Wednesday in the Senate is that he was no Alberto Gonzales, with the frequent memory lapses and possibly intentional misstatements. But that is a very low bar. On torture, domestic spying and other important matters, Mr. Mukasey parroted the Bush administration’s deplorable line. He was particularly disappointing in his see-no-evil approach to the misconduct at the Justice Department before he arrived.
The American people deserve better from their highest law-enforcement official, who was making his first appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee since taking office in November. To a disturbing degree, he has adopted his predecessor’s habit of saying precisely what the White House wanted to hear.
It should not have been hard for Mr. Mukasey to admit that waterboarding — the odious practice of making prisoners believe they are about to be drowned — is torture. He frankly conceded that if it were done to him it “would feel that way.” But he weaved and dodged questions from senators about whether it is torture when it is done to other people, and whether it is illegal.
Mr. Mukasey also pushed Congress to give immunity to telecommunications companies for any illegal acts they committed while helping the administration carry out its outlaw domestic spying program. Mr. Mukasey is responsible for enforcing the law. Pushing Congress to immunize lawbreakers, especially before it learns what laws were broken, is inconsistent with this duty.
Mr. Mukasey took office in the wake of a scandal — accusations that federal prosecutions were politicized, that nonpolitical positions were filled with partisans and that Mr. Gonzales lied about it to Congress. These serious charges did not go away simply because Mr. Gonzales did. Mr. Mukasey needs to ensure that they are investigated, and to assure the public that any misconduct in his department has been cleaned up.
He has yet to do so. In his written testimony, Mr. Mukasey ignored the scandal that roiled his department last year. His answers to questions from senators on the subject were lackadaisical. He seemed to know and care little about well-publicized charges by Scott Bloch, the chief of the Office of Special Counsel, that the Justice Department is impeding his investigation.
Mr. Mukasey was equally disappointing about the refusal of certain administration witnesses to answer Congressional subpoenas to testify about the United States attorneys scandal. He suggested that if the administration believes that executive privilege shields them, that ends the matter. He could not be more mistaken.
Mr. Mukasey has taken some important steps to depoliticize the Justice Department, notably establishing a better wall between the White House and the department. His testimony was an unfortunate reminder, however, that he has yet to show the independence and respect for the rule of law that the job requires.

Boy, the New York Times has some set of balls. I live in Westchester and know that last year some ball-less, sell-his-soul jackass at the NY Times killed a story about the DA and court corruption involving Pirro and Nicolai. Though the NY Times had 3 reporters working nearly ONE YEAR on the multi-part story, and even AFTER the story was written, a senior NYC Times executive killed the story. The NOT-Corrupt-Free New York Times should remind themselves of the notion about people in glass houses. Memo to NY Times: Before you comment on Mr. Mukasey, clean up your own coverups. The public deserves better than the corrupt New York Times- don't read it.

You can win more with honey is the motto of real warriors trying to get intel. Torture has never produced anything but false intel and thus why these interrogation techniques are useless, except to sicko's who get off on torturing people similar to Hitler card carrying members. Waterboarding is illegal and has been for over 100 years in most civilized nations, I am appalled as everyone else is that our country now resembles nazi germany and you know why, skull and bones, the insideous group of yalees who urinate on each other for inclusion and eat on nazi flatware, created cia, and are ruining america. they got a good lead on us while operating in secrecy and planting deep into our country. Secret is out, they are getting creamed slowly but surely. The Council on Foreign Relations, the offshoot of Skulls is stacking this election like they stacked the Bush v. Kerry (both skulls) and this is because the only way they control the US is through illegal politicking and planting and oh yeah, throwing elections. Oh Mukasey is a Yalee too??? Proskauer represents Yale, this smells funny for a Jewish law firm unless of course they are Judenrat.

Is the First Department which since Joseph Proskauer's day has been Proskauer controlled a breeding ground for corrupt lawyers to plant to do dirty things. Take lawyers in complaints filed, derail justice for a favor and well you guess the rest.

ReplyDeleteThe BUFFALO NEWS had a small blurb in the back of its local section today.... it said here is an 800 number to an OIG OFFICE, you can call to report any complaints about NY STATE GOV...INCLUDING ANY CORRUPTION. I thought i would call it and see who this OIG ANSWERED to. I found out it was GOV SPITZER'S DEPT. Knowing that no NY STATE AGENCY WOULD INVESTIGATE THE OFFICE OF CORRUPT DISCRIMINATION OR OCA, I ASKED THE FEMALE WHO ANSWERED IF SHE WOULD TAKE CORRUPTION INFORMATION AGAINST THE NY COURT SYSTEM. ReplyDeleteI wish I could give you all the details of my case, but my appeal is still pending. I won't even tell you which department now, but suffice it to say they refused to wait for my 440.10, which clearly shows the White Plains ADA (under Pirro at the time) committing prosecutorial misconduct (lying to the jury, court, and trial counsel) and their key witness perjuring herself in tandem with them to make sure I would be convicted as I had the balls to plead not guilty, though they were the ones committing the felonies.
As to the NY Times, they took their lines from the Journal News. No NYT reporter was ever in court or interviewed anyone related to
the case. They made up quotes that my attorney never uttered, just to be sure to smear me before trial at Pirro's behest.
On top of that, the Journal News has now blocked me from making comments to their stories online: so much for free speech as I consistently point out how horrendous it all is: not just the judges and DA, but the NYT, Journal News, News Radio 88, etc. It's all a big f***in package deal folks. Westchester in particular, but the rest of NY is a virtual police state. And we sneer at the Russians!
I will provide details to you all in the future, as that is the only "relief" I can ever hope to get.

Maybe we should bring Bush to NY, not a place he is comfortable in, and have the OFFICE OF COURT ADMINISTRATION judge his illegal tactics of the past 7 yrs and see what he thinks. This is a sick torture video link below (bring the kids) but Attorney General Mukasey says that in certain instances, where the cows could provide intel against terrorists it may or may not be ok. Of course, you can't tell if this torture intel was worth it without first torturing. But who cares, if you torture the cow and it has no intel or more likely, say anything to stop torture intel, you would have never known without torturing and who cares about the innocent ones. Rumsfeld is rumored to have left politics and become a cattleman with Gonzales, Libby and Rove, to date they have tortured numerous cows who have led to intel that may or may not be true but who cares, torture is fun and legal now in America.
