Judge borrows 8OG from real estate family, then hires lender's brother

A Brooklyn judge who took an $80,000 loan from a prominent real estate family hired one of the sons for her coveted court attorney job - even before he passed the bar exam.
Brooklyn Civil Court Judge Lila Gold appointed Mitchell Shpelfogel, then 22, in January 2006 for the competitive $63,000-a-year state post - only weeks after he graduated from law school.
He passed the bar a month later.
Shpelfogel - whose family's Brighton Beach buildings have had hundreds of violations - said hiring him had nothing to do with his brother, Rafael, 27, lending Gold the money for her uncontested 2003 bid. The loan was quickly repaid.
"There was no quid pro quo. I'm a capable, talented person. We've been family friends for many years," he said. "Why shouldn't she take a family friend, if he's qualified?"
Few state judges hire assistants right out of law school, because the job requires drafting legal opinions. Experienced lawyers often seek the positions as a path to the bench.
Shpelfogel said he doesn't want a judgeship or any other court post when Gold retires.
"I took this job because I'm able to be home and be with my family," said Shpelfogel, a father of two. Gold did not return calls.
The Shpelfogels own at least nine Brooklyn buildings, including a multimillion-dollar Manhattan Beach house and two apartment houses cited for multiple violations.
"They are using the money of their long-suffering tenants to get ahead politically," charged Zev Yourman, a community activist who sued Shpelfogel for defamation.
Tenants at 2822 Brighton Eighth St., owned by patriarch Sam Shpelfogel, showed the Daily News leaks in walls, malfunctioning stoves, uneven floors, mold, broken cabinets and complained of mice.
The city sued Shpelfogel twice since 2004 for more than 1,000 violations settled after he fixed them. Shpelfogel still owes $9,000 for emergency repairs.
Former tenant Yustus Kotz said she moved from 15 Brighton Eighth - where Sam Shpelfogel owes the city $1,468 for emergency repairs and 275 housing violations are listed - after Mitchell Shpelfogel threatened her when she complained about terrible conditions.
"He kicked my door, demanded rent in cash and called me an illegal immigrant and a prostitute," she said.
"You are not impartial," Sam Shpelfogel told a reporter. Rafael Shpelfogel could not be reached.

money. isn't that what being a judge is all about in new york. to most judges, anyway. i bet the honest judges are pretty pissed. i'd be.
what's money between friends, don't you get it! Hey, remember everybody has to make a living, including Judges. This Judge should be bounced off the bench.
i am angry with the judicial system. How can an institution entrusted with insuring fairness in housing , employment, and other areas where discrimination and bias is rampant when the 8th judicial system based on my own personal knowledge and experiences, engages in such flagarant practises that it has become common knowledge. In fact, hiring practices are more often than not based on what candidate has a connection to some judge.
It's embarassing ? Is it? i mean in the extreme you have reserved positions for politics patronages and other slick terms. but when a typist can't get a job because she didn't sleep with someone. Or her aunt wasn't a judges classmate? come on! how are they to be trusted to identify with fairness when its in their courtroom as part of a legal proceeding in which they must Judge it??
holy crap. i just read the "related story" about Carvel's judge Tony Soprano - he got a $200k loan from an involved bank. 10-1 Judge Tony ain't payin' that loan back BUT OTHER PEOPLE ARE........should be looked into......
How Interpreters are treated: I served them with the utmost professionalism and integrity. My skills were unparalled and performance always satisfactory. Well, i was hated for being able to speak several languages. Working per-diem was ok. but when i accepted an on staff position due to financial and family stresses; i was treated like the 3rd world servant.
during down times my duties included carrying things to the bosses car; delivering packages to secretaries that came through the mail for their personal use. Bring coffee to clerks. I did it out of personal courtesy at first with a humble spirit.
I later learned humility as other principles were, misinterpreted by my so called colleagues. When this became obvious and i protested; why what nerve of me!!! mY ADVICE TO ANY AND ALL INTERPRETERS....STAY PER-DIEM. AND FIND OTHER WORTHY JOBS TO DO. OCA EMPLOYEES HAS TO HUMILIATE (TRY TO AT LEAST) ANYONE THAT HAS MORE TALENT THAN ITS HACK HIRED EMPLOYEES.

I did want to comment that judges have the taxpayer raped by being given the opportunity to fill many of the OCA made patronage titles of....ADMINISTRATIVE BLAH, BLAH, TO FILL FOR ANY POLTICIAL OR SEXUAL FAVORS! This administrative title was originally given to OCA by CSEA, THEIR BED PARTNER, to use for low grade employee patronage. The title was not to exceed a grade 18, and now it is used to hire tons of political females and a few men, above all civil service titles and includes grades beyond 32....$100,000 or more! CSEA AND THEIR LOVER OCA have worked in concert to corrupt this ny court system during the past 20 yrs...the JUDY KAYE YEARS! SHE SURELY GETS AROUND, AS YOU SEE! I HAVE PROOF THAT CSEA WORKS IN COLLUSION WITH OCA AGAINST ITS MEMBERS! CSEA HAS NOT WON ANY ACTION IN WNY AGAINST OCA IN ALL THAT TIME...CSEA SAVES THE CASH FOR THEIR OWN BENEFITS, FOR THE 3 YEARS THEY DON'T WORK ON THE ALWAYS SAME AND FEEBLE CONTRACT. CHECK OUT CSEA'S OFFICES AND MULTIPLE LUNCH ROOMS ETC, WHERE IN BUFFALO WE ARE TOLD BY THE CHIEF CLERK, SHARON T. TO EAT WITH THE PUBLIC IN THE CAFETERIA, AFTER YOU HAVE JUST WRITTEN COMMITTMENTS TO SEND THEIR FAMILY MEMBER INTO CUSTODY. SO, TO HAVE JUDGES GIVE AWAY HIGH PAYING JOBS IS NOT NEW OR RARE OR OBJECTED TO BY THE UNION OF LOVE...IT HAS BEEN HIDDEN AND NOT SPOKEN OF BECAUSE OCA THREATENS IT EMPLOYEES JOBS AND SECURITY AND SO MANY EMPLOYEES ARE ALL SHAKING FROM FEAR OVER OCA'S ORGANIZED CRIME POLITICS. The above story is just a manifestation of what is constantly going on WITHIN THE OFFICE OF COURT ADMINISTRATION AND CSEA!
