Independence in Both NY and Washington is Best Cure for Corruption

N.Y. needs independence in Washington: Harold Ford weighs in on Martha Coakley's defeat
The New York Daily News by HAROLD FORD, JR. - January 21, 2010

The defeat of Martha Coakley in Massachusetts represents the latest rejection of a governing style that takes the taxpayers for granted and puts partisan, insider politics ahead of everything else. Put simply, the defining moment in the Massachusetts Senate campaign was during the final debate when David Gergen asked Scott Brown whether he would be willing to "sit in Teddy Kennedy's seat" and block the passage of health care reform for another 15 years. Brown responded, rightly, that "it's not the Kennedys' seat . . . it's the people's seat." And while I disagree with Brown about most issues of public policy, I absolutely agree that a United States senator has to put the people first when making decisions. I have made it very clear that if I run for the U.S. Senate, and if I am fortunate enough to be elected, I will be an independent Democrat who puts the people of New York before the politicians in Albany and Washington. All the time. Every time. To be sure, there are many issues where the interests of the people collide with what the professional politicians want. And frequently, our politicians end up sticking together - forming a narrow, insulated, self-reinforcing elite. That's not me. And that makes them worried. New Yorkers know that if I run, I will be on their side. Always.

Let me be specific: On health care, I have made it very clear that I will stand with New Yorkers against any efforts that would cost us an additional billion dollars in Medicaid payments and impose unfair financial burdens on our state in the form of extra fees or taxes. New York already sends far too much money to Washington, getting back far too little in return. Health reform remains important. But in the wake of this week's election, the legislation should be narrowed to prevent insurance companies from denying coverage for preexisting conditions, enact responsible tort reform and provide health coverage to all children. And states must have more input into how health coverage is expanded. Make no mistake, I will take a backseat to no one in supporting health care reform. But not at the expense of New York State. Not now. Not ever. And while I understand why the President is putting the onus on banks and other financial institutions to pay back the money they borrowed, let's not forget that the financial services industry is critical to New York State's economic well-being - to creating jobs, to stimulating the economy and to providing needed tax revenue. Congress should pass financial regulatory reform that compels greater transparency in how risk is managed, protects consumers from excessive banking and mortgage fees and expands shareholder say about compensation, among other priorities. But it must also take great care not to harm the great engine of New York's economy. With renewed concerns about terrorism and national security emerging, New York needs a senator who will put our state first. That's why I'm thinking, very seriously, about running for United States Senate. Ford represented Tennessee in Congress from 1997 to 2007. He lives in Manhattan and is a vice chairman of Bank of America-Merrill Lynch.

The time has come to upset the apple cart- the CORRUPT apple cart that is New York 'pay-to-play' corrupt politics. If Albany law makers don't get their sh*t together, let's vote them all out.

I'd also like to see Chuckie Schumer's hairy ars sent packing. Doesn't everyone realize that it's Charlie boy we have to thank for the Madoff type scams being allowed by him protecting his friends from the SEC?!?!?!

Tort reform has nothing to do with health care reform. If you are injured by Doctor, hospital or anyone else who provides medical services you have a right to sue and be compensated for your injuries. Taking away that right is injurious to the public that Mr. Ford claims to want to put forth. If you want to help doctors and hospitals get the insurance industry to pay them properly. The insurance companies have cut reimbursements for some services up to 80%. Readers would be surprised at how little doctors are paid by insurance companies for life savings procedures and services doctors provide to patients. In some cases plumbers are paid better than doctors for equivalent time of work , again based on insurance reimbursements. Mr. Ford is ill advised to talk about tort reform as part health reform. In fact, tort reform was debated and rejected by both houses of Congress as part health reform as they found there is no relation between the two. Mr. Ford is only attempting when he makes these statement along with his comments about the need to help Wall Street to make himself more palatable to the business community. As Wall Street does need reforming and more oversight. When their such large divergence of Wall Street success versus Main Street that is a serious problem. No one more informed than Paul Volker has stated that the financial products created by Wall Street in the last 20 years has no benefit to the public. Mr. Ford should take the time to read before he talks. We do not need a Palin in office from New York State.

the insurance companies cut payment for procedures to our doctors but the CEO's of all these institutions make millions and claim they have no money....
they seem to have money for bribes and lobbying money!
stop the campaign/lobbying money!

this article says it all, told to vote no on any healthcare reform, ok, we agree and all those in your seat are denied all health care, if you get sick, to bad, you die!
no healthcare for you or your family!
how can there ever be a proper healthcare reform if bribes are influencing decisions and not doctors!

Palin, you mean the Avon Lady....
Ding Dong!!!!!!

Ding Dong ? The problem is that you and many others no longer recognize a real person any more. We have become so used to the slick scumbag lawyers and other "Highly Educated " nit wits, that we don`t know how to elect
or recognize a honest,God fearing person. If you think Obama is the answer,I suggest that you go back to the basics and learn something this time.

Silver's tort lawyer rats express their concerns on this site. Both Silver and Sampson are on the payrolls of The Trial Lawyers. Would we vote for someone on the mob boss's payroll? What concern do you think Chucky, the rat, Cheese put into looking into tort reform while in DC? Gillibrat is a Chucky Cheese hand puppet. When is Chucky or Gillibrat going to ask for federal investigation of NY courts, lawyers and judges? after they're elected? At least, Chucky and his hand puppet made sure Nebraska didn't have to pay the same Medicaid that NY does. Chucky looks out for your money and makes sure it flows to his fellow lawyer rats. Today's lesson from Chucky, Silver, Sampson, Gillibrat and Lippman: Trust us.

Ford sounded good at first but he used to york for a bank/financial institution. I was wondering what type of job he was doing that he is taking tme of from.
Let see as N.Y,ers we are squeezed between the trial lawyers/judges/banks and finacial
and now more by the medical groups and insurance companys. They write the laws we have to live by.
Who is next?

They want to tax soda.

Even Bloomberg is getting into the act. eat this and not that. First with the trans fats now with the salt. Tell us how much salt is in thier and let us at least make a few decisions for ourselves.

It is Friday January 22, 2010 and the fruity nut of Bernadette E. Lupinetti, Esq. has yet to be taken in to custody for many crimes which among many includes participating in the corruption and sexual exploitation of children. This criminal has destroyed many children and families for money. This evil must be put behind bars or in a good mental health facility (forever)to receive the help she needs for her mental problems. Only mentally distrubed people used their positions to abuse children and families. Get this nut out of the Courtrooms and away from children. Many agencies in California will be advice in the event this criminal decides to follow her husband and continued business as usual in that State.
