NY Lawyer Fired Over Personal Use of Office Credit Card, Computer
The New York Law Journal by Joel Stashenko - March 20, 2009
The counsel at the state Division of Human Rights has been fired after an Inspector General's probe of his use of a state credit card for personal expenses and doing private legal work on his work computer. Inspector General Joseph Fisch said Thomas Shanahan ran up $530 in improper charges on his credit card, including charges from Manhattan restaurants. Mr. Fisch said Mr. Shanahan had been counseled in May 2008 over making improper charges. The inspector General said Mr. Shanahan also had sought, and been denied, permission to do outside legal work from his state office. Mr. Shanahan, 41, who lives in Manhattan, made $144,070 a year as deputy commissioner and counsel.

How stupid and greedy can you be to lose your job over such incompetence. Now he is going to have grind it out like the rest us, with no benefits, healthcare, paid leave, sick days, paid vacation, pension, life insurance, union negotiated raises, complaining clients, corrupt judges, etc... Further he will now find what we all know and are complaining about. Welcome sir to CORRUPT COURTS.
It's amazing how quick they'll arrest someone for illegal use of a credit card..but when it comes to committing hard core federal and state crimes, they'll simply ignore the crimes, pass the buck to another agency, or just sweep it under the rug, therefore they are aiding and abetting. What's wrong with this picture folks?
Why does the first posting say "This post has been removed by the author." ???
Has anyone heard of free speech?
In my opinion all lawyers do this type of thing. They figure that no one will catch them. Who wanted to get this jerk?
He should be disbarred.
hey stupid it's called stealing, remember that, didn't you learn that in law school.
I've heard a lot of good things about Mr. Fisch. Maybe some hope here.
There are different Inspector General's for different agencies of the State. Fisch is not with the OCA. That is still Spatz.
You are right and OCA'S...OIG is as corrupt and as evil as OCA...I know I have proof from dealing with them.
I am not sure any of the NY state OIG'S are better than OCA'S.... this case is about stealing...one of the only things that angers OCA...unless they are doing it. I have seen them ruin people they have caught doing it on a small level.
But let one of their own participate in it on a grand scale while holding an exempt title, leading a court in upstate...then OCA is caught ignoring it...even though they have been put on notice.
I want to see that story told here, before I believe NY state is serious about oversight.
