Corruption and the "Nepotism Pinata"

Sen. Pedro Espada to crack down on nepotism after son quits Senate job
The New York Daily News by Kenneth Lovett - August 15, 2009

Sen. Pedro Espada aims to crack down on nepotism in the State Senate
Voter discontent should be motivation for Albany change

ALBANY, NY - Days after his son quit his Senate job under pressure, an angry Sen. Pedro Espada warned other lawmakers he'll be keeping tabs on future hires. Espada (D-Bronx) told the Daily News he never has publicly raised the issue when the family and "girlfriends" of fellow lawmakers were on the state payroll. Upset at what he called the "pinata" treatment of his son, Pedro G. Espada, and the mostly anonymous quotes from lawmakers ripping the hiring, the senator warned all gloves are off. "I'm not going to be a vigilante, but I am going to be vigilant," Espada said. "I'm going to know why people are hired and what their job descriptions are."

He added that "everybody (will be) cutting out all the nonsense about relatives, girlfriends. It's over, it's over, it's over." The lawmaker refused to name names about hiring abuses. He said he appreciates the support he got from some Democrats, but "I will not forget some of the ugly things that some of the other so-called anonymous sources had to say. It's personal, damn right. I'd like to meet a father or mother who wouldn't be upset by this." Pedro G. Espada was recently hired as a $120,000-a-year Senate employee. He quit this week after aides in Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's office began looking into whether the senator was involved in the hiring, which would violate state law. Critics say the younger Espada was hired as payback after his father returned to the Democratic fold to end a Senate stalemate. The senator has vehemently denied playing a role or that there was a quid pro quo. Meanwhile, Sen. Reuben Diaz asked Cuomo to "determine the number of family members of state legislators, commissioners and department heads" on the Legislature's payroll. klovett@nydailynews.com

Will Saint Andrew extend his benevolence from protecting Crooked Lawyers and Judges to protecting politicians who aren't lawyers?

Oh, this should be fun! I sure hope we can get seats on the 50 yard line! Pedro has figured out another angle! Much to do about nothing! God Bless him!

this is great, let's create more chaos and get them all turning each other in.....
that is the only way it will end.....
it is not only our lawyers and judges, it sometimes is our politicians violating our rights!
create more chaos!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so-called anonymous sources had to say

who could that be, who creates the most chaos, who starts vicious rumors and spreads them around daily until they become a mountain........
I hope it all comes back to bite them, they have no idea how many they hurt with their trash mentality..........

let me get this straight.

Big Pedro was bribed to come back to the Dems with a phony plush job for little Pedro. Then they get busted. Then BP lashes out at all the other pols, saying "Whats your PROBLEM??? You know we ALL do it!, wait til I bust yer mistress!"

priceless.

he may just need a new job soon...
I hope he creates chaos, turns everyone in and they all start backbiting each other, after all he learned it from the best of the trouble there is!

To anonymous at 10:17...you are assuredly talking about OCA...the most vicious slanderer and defamator in this universe...you should be disgusted how many people they have destroyed...hundreds and hundreds...posing as the beloved judicial system...appalling isn't it?!!!
Ashame you are so reluctant to say their name...the truth doesn't hurt...make sure it is always the truth and nothing butt, and not an imaginary story concocted by them to ruin those who reveal their crimes...that they commit everyday!
Congratulations to you for exposing that and them!

Saint Andrew? How the heck do you think he got his job, thru the NY Times? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.

The arrogance of this pos posing as a Senator. Or is he really acting like a state senator?

Go ahead Pedro, and dig em all up. The State House may soon be empty.

You got caught you moron because you took the spotlight.

Saint Andrew is as corrupt as his predecessor. Saint Andrew defends the corrupt judges and lawyer grievance committees when he should defend the people. Sorry Saint Andrew, it's not your duty to defend corruption; it's your duty to protect the people. Do you expect the Times to protect you the way they did Spitzer? See www.judgewatch.org/web-pages/searching-nys/correspondence-spitzer.htm

maybe the New York State Troopers will help......

St. Andrew seems to be able to control any negative press against him so far. I think much of what is mentioned in the media will have to do with the agenda of the media. I am sure there are relevant stories out there that could ruin St.Andrew if they were published.

St. Andrew could give a fiddler's _____ about the public. Even Judge "Jeannine" didn't really want the AG's job as she viewed it a step down.

The AG has been nothing but a BS job until Spitzer found it and used it to get a lot of free publicity that led him right to the State House, and now to the S___ House. The Double Edged Sword of publicity cuts both ways.

I think all one has to do to understand the ineffectiveness of the AG office is to read the Martin Tankleff Report on the 'investigation' the AG allegedly conducted.

It is all a bunch of BULL___T.

These so called Investigative Units only do the bidding of their masters.

The IG producing the Waterfront Commission report is a farce. The WF has been run by the ILA for years. Nothing much happens on the NY Docks anyway.

Court of Appeals Judge Jones put together a Task Force to investigate wrongful convictions. Another farce in action. If Judge Jones and his distinguished panel on the Task Force don't git it by now they will never get it.

The Task Force is supposed to only investigate those cases that a prosecutor/cops/courts have already ruled on. What a JOKE! It is the prosecutor and cops that are responsible for the wrongful convictions. The courts put their finger is the air when deciding what to do with the case.

The NYS SIC once did some good work, not by design, but by accident (1989 Report on Corruption in Suffolk County DA/cops), and that was pretty much the last good work they have ever done.

Most of those mentioned in that report are alive and well and doing better than ever. In fact, they come back and are even more arrogant than they ever were.

Mexico just fired all of their Board Patrol personel. That's what we should do. Fire everyone and start over. That includes but is not limited to Judges and all their little helpers. The Guardians and Referees are some of the ones that are feeding the corruption.

agree with most of what "A bunch of Bull--it" says above. this makes many wonder if there will ever be any real change even thru efforts of this blog and members. perhaps the Anderson case coming up will shed some lights. all efforts appreciated of course but the vast amount of corruption in the judiciary is so well documented it makes one wonder why it has never changed and if it ever will? still Hoping!

it has to start with the lawyers, they are self-governed, this has to stop, they need to be fined and disbarred for their mis/actions.
Once it cost them they will have less money to pass amongst each other to hurt others, that continues this evil..........
they are using favors and money to
commend evil...........
make it cost them!
